Health is more than not being ill. Communicable diseases spread between people; learning how they spread helps stop them.

Health

The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of disease.
Communicable diseases spread between people. Non-communicable diseases, like heart disease, do not.

Pathogens

Pathogens cause communicable disease.

Stopping the spread

Clean water and sanitation (cholera), mosquito nets and insecticides (malaria), condoms and screening (HIV), isolation and vaccination.
Worked example

Suggest how to reduce the spread of cholera.

  1. Cholera spreads in contaminated water.
  2. Provide clean drinking water and good sanitation.

Answer: Clean water and sanitation.

Key idea

Health is physical, mental and social well-being. Communicable diseases are caused by pathogens: bacteria, viruses, protists and fungi. Break the route of spread to stop them.
