Noun phrases: adding precise detail
Good writers pack detail into a few words. One of the best tools for this is the expanded noun phrase. Learn to build them and your descriptions will become sharper straight away.
What is a noun phrase?
'the gate' is a simple noun phrase.
'the rusty iron gate at the end of the lane' is an expanded noun phrase: the noun 'gate' is still the head, but more detail has been added before and after it.
How to expand one
| Part | Example |
|---|---|
| Determiner | the, a, this, my, some |
| Adjectives (before the noun) | rusty, iron |
| Head noun | gate |
| Prepositional phrase (after the noun) | at the end of the lane |
| Relative clause (after the noun) | that nobody ever opened |
Choose, do not pile up
'The crooked house on the hill' is sharper.
Pick one or two precise words and add a phrase that shows where or what. A strong noun can do the work of several adjectives: 'mansion' says more than 'big house'.
Expand 'the dog' into a precise noun phrase with a determiner, one adjective and a prepositional phrase.
- Keep the determiner: 'the'.
- Add one precise adjective: 'scruffy'.
- Add a prepositional phrase after the noun: 'by the bins'.
Answer: the scruffy dog by the bins
A noun phrase is built around a head noun. Expand it with a determiner, carefully chosen adjectives, and a phrase or clause after the noun. Choose precise words rather than piling them up.
- Noun
- A word that names a person, place, thing or idea: 'girl', 'London', 'table', 'courage'.
- Determiner
- A word that comes before a noun to point to it or show how many: 'the', 'a', 'this', 'some', 'every'.
- Clause
- A group of words with a verb and someone or something doing it. A main clause makes sense on its own; a subordinate clause does not.
