Higher: connaître, écrire and other irregular verbs

At Higher you also need connaître and écrire in full, the singular of seven more irregular verbs, three more past participles and two more kinds of command.

Connaître and écrire in full

connaître = to know (a person or place). Reconnaître and disparaître work the same way.
écrire = to write. Décrire works the same way.
Perfect: j'ai connu, j'ai écrit. Imperfect: je connaissais, j'écrivais.

Seven more verbs: the singular

You need je, tu and il / elle for these. Careful: je suis is both I am (être) and I follow (suivre).

Participles and commands

devoir: j'ai dû (I had to), pouvoir: j'ai pu (I was able to), savoir: j'ai su (I found out).
J'ai dû rester à la maison. = I had to stay at home.
Command of être: Sois sage! (tu) Soyez prudents! (vous)
Let's: use the nous form without nous: Allons au cinéma! Choisissons un film! Attendons ici!

Worked example

Translate: I know her brother. Let's write to him!

to know a person = connaître: je connais
let's write = écrivons (nous form, no nous)
to him = lui, before the verb

Answer: Je connais son frère. Écrivons-lui!

Key idea

Connaître: connais, connaît, connaissons. Écrire: écris, écrivons, écrivent. Bois, cours, crois, reçois, ris, suis, vois. J'ai dû, pu, su, connu, écrit. Sois / soyez. Let's = nous form without nous.

Common mistakes

Not “connaisez”. It needs a double s.
Not “Es prudent!”. Es is the present tense, not the command.
